Artist Statement
Through my work I meld existing and imagined landscapes with an internal dialogue, creating abstractions held by the calligraphic mark. It is an exploration of structure, form, and light.
My visual references are from long held interests in ancient cities, geology, and celestial events. This interest is combined with my technical knowledge of historic use of resins and varnishes. I enjoy using various materials – oil and chalk pigments, charcoal, and graphite- and the subtle variations in the use of shellac and gamboge to achieve the desired aesthetic layering. This use ultimately influences the line color and value inherently expressed in the work.
